WOFF vs WOFF2 vs TTF vs OTF: choose your font format

Choose a format for the destination where the font will be used. FontReady’s free converter accepts TTF, OTF, WOFF and WOFF2, lets you select supported outputs and includes a stylesheet in the downloaded webfont kit.

WOFF2 for web delivery; TTF and OTF for other workflows

WOFF2 is a practical starting point for a modern website; WOFF is an alternative when your project needs it. TTF and OTF are also used in desktop and design workflows. A platform’s upload field may accept a different set of formats from your website’s final CSS.

FontReady lists supported output choices after processing. Static TTF/OTF outline conversion has different constraints from wrapping native outlines in WOFF2. Variable, colour and point-based layout fonts retain native outlines when cross-format conversion is unsupported.

Free TTF to WOFF2 and OTF to WOFF2 conversion

  1. Upload your licensed TTF or OTF in the free font converter.
  2. Choose WOFF2 as the output. Add another format only if your destination needs it.
  3. Start conversion and inspect the preview and conversion notes.
  4. Download the WOFF2 file or the complete CSS kit within the 24-minute download window.
  5. Test the result with your actual text and website layout.

WOFF to WOFF2, TTF to OTF and OTF to TTF

Use the same converter for a WOFF input and select WOFF2. For supported static files, you can also request TTF or OTF output. Cross-outline conversion removes original hinting and can approximate curves, so inspect the result rather than treating it as a filename change.

Renaming .otf to .ttf or .woff2 does not convert its internal data. Keep the original and use the output format reported by the converter.

A compressed format is not a promise of a smaller result

Already optimized files may show little saving or increase in size. The free compressor reports measured input and output sizes and can optionally subset character coverage. Subsetting removes unneeded coverage; it cannot add characters missing from the source.

Legacy SVG fonts are separate from SVG artwork. FontReady’s SVG font output is for legacy tools and is not a modern browser font recommendation.

Questions & answers

Can I convert TTF to WOFF2 for free?

Yes. Upload your TTF, select WOFF2 and download the result using FontReady’s free font converter. No FontReady account is required.

Can I convert OTF to TTF for free?

Yes, for supported static fonts. Outline conversion has limitations and removes original hinting. Check the generated preview and conversion notes before using the result.

Is a free font converter a source of free fonts?

No. FontReady converts files you supply. A free conversion does not grant a licence to use, modify or distribute a typeface.
