TRY IT WITH A REAL TASK
Example: one fixed weight from a variable font
If your font provides a wght axis from 100 to 900, set it to 650 and leave the other axes at the values you want. Export pins every available axis, producing one static cut. The controls show your font’s actual ranges; a static input cannot gain new axes here.
Variable source → choose every axis value → static TTF / OTF / WOFF2
A LITTLE GUIDANCE
From idea to output.
- Choose a variable font up to 4 MiB. Selecting it confirms you have permission to process and create static versions.
- Read its axes, then adjust every slider or choose a named instance.
- Export the selected cut in its native outline format or WOFF2, then download and test it.
This exports one fully pinned static cut, not a variable-font editor. No server font history is provided. Keep your original, check your licence and test the result before publishing.
GOOD QUESTIONS
Is this font tool free to use?
Yes. This FontReady tool is free to use and does not require a FontReady account. A free tool does not grant a licence to the font you choose; your original font licence still applies.
Does this create a variable font from a static font?
No. It reads an existing variable font and pins every available axis to produce one static instance. It does not invent additional weights or axes.
Where is my variable font processed?
Axis inspection and static export send the selected font to FontReady when you choose to read axes or export. Your file selection is your confirmation of processing permission. Application code uses bounded memory and isolated processing, returning metadata or font bytes without saving the font, a conversion job or a reusable download URL. Hosting infrastructure may buffer requests.
Which formats can I export?
Choose the original outline format, TTF for TrueType outlines or OTF for CFF outlines, or a WOFF2 wrapper. Supported CFF2 inputs are downgraded to static CFF. Signed fonts, SVG tables, VARC and unsupported fonts are rejected.
Does an axis setting guarantee an identical preview everywhere?
No. Browsers, shaping engines and operating systems can render differently. Test the static file with your actual text and layout. Keep the original variable font and confirm its licence allows modification.
